Bakheng Temple

Colorful bushes in bloom line each side of the walkway…as Bakheng Temple stand in grand and magnificent beauty.

You can still see the amazing splendor that this place once held and is a rare gem against the jungle – which is nothing short of impressive.

Bakheng Temple was built at the beginning of the 8th century, it is one of the oldest temples in Cambodia. It sits in the center of the old capital Hariharalaya and it is believed that the site originally once had an older building replaced by Bakheng Temple.

Bekheng Temple is quite a mysterious place. It is a five stepped pyramid (like ones found all over the world especially in Egypt and South America) and built to resemble Mount Meru – the sacred mountain in Hindu mythology that was dedicated to Shiva.

Bakheng Temple demonstrates the remarkable design capabilities of the ancient Khmer Empire and is an engineering masterpiece.

Something striking that one can’t help but notice are the steps leading up to the top. They are unusually high making it a harder to climb and only leads us to think that these ancient Khmer people must have been very tall indeed.

However local legend has it, the reason why the steps were built big – was in order to stop any evil spirits from entering.

Near full-size statutes of elephants flanking each corner on the first levels and this site is abound by well-preserved sculptures.

Bakheng Temple is a wonderful place to take photos, the view from each platform is impressive and one can only imagine the history that this temple must have seen over the centuries.

This temple is located on top of a hill and is a very popular place to see the sunset that begins generally 5.43 pm (depending on the time of year – so best to check).

This Temple takes a proud place in our 10 Best Temples in Siem Reap, not only because it is amazing to see – but also because it is one of the oldest temples in the Siem Reap area and remarkably well preserved considering it is over 1,200 years old.

Siem Reap is an exciting place to visit with many new things to see and do….are you brave enough to try  The Eat-A-Bug Challenge and have an experience you will never forget.
