New Years Eve in April – Siem Reap was quite the event and a big tick for next year on your travelling calendar.

New Years Eve in April – Siem Reap this year was celebrated between the 14th – 16th of April, 2017 and what a party it was in Pub Street. People came from far and wide to join in the festivities, which seems to be growing by the year- according to both locals and expats.

Most people in the streets were packing heat – but the only heat they are armed with ….is the fun kind.

Bearing their large, pump-action water pistol, crowds of friends and strangers got into full swing with the celebrations. In mass raids or unexpected skirmishes that suddenly break out all around – everyone gets into the action as streams of water from the large, space aged pistols fire out in all directions amidst the fun and laughter.

Even some of the bar staff were in on the action for New Years Eve in April – Siem Reap with Vena & Co.

But the reveling was not just confined to city center and even in the outer areas, the whole of Siem Reap joined in the festivities – for a party to remember.

Lining the roads into town and laden with water hazards, crowds of locals all bearing their weapons of mass drenching – whether it be water pistols, buckets or hoses pipe are there at the ready – waiting for their next victim.

Travelling to Pub Street in a tuk-tuk as I dared venture out, I soon realize my fate is dictated by the stop and start of the flow of traffic.

Caught in the congestion, you are no less at the mercy of locals both young and old, who fire upon you at will – among their laughter and squeals of delight.

Speaking to Alex, one of the bar owner near Pub Street as he dodges stream of water. “We built the bar to accommodate such festivals and it is great to see everyone have so much fun.”

All around the bar, people dance and cheer as wayward water squirts that seem to come from every direction, while the bar floor quickly gets drenched.

During New Years Eve in April – Siem Reap venturing out into the street all you can hear is music pumping and squeals of laughter, some folks even coming prepared with plastic rain coats and goggles.

The sparkle in the reveler’s eyes was an absolute joy to see…because it has not always been like this for the Cambodian citizens.

Not so long ago (from 1963 – 1997), this country was involved in a devastating war – which killed 1/3 of the population – but this did not destroy the spirit of these wonderful people.

The atmosphere in Pub Street is one of togetherness – which is something that this country needs as it goes through in the steps of recovery and to show the world the true spirit of peace.

New Years Eve in Siem Reap is a celebration which brings the world closer with no aggression, fighting or angry words….but just good old fashioned fun and laughter.

The joy that this celebration brought to many this year, maybe a sign of the times and a turning point in this countries history, which has seen so much pain – is now looking forward to a brighter future.

To attend New Years Eve in April – Siem Reap was a true privilege and a delight to be a part of. On a personal level, it is something I will never forget…and is up there in my Top 10 List of Most Awesome Memories.
